“Although the word is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming it.”
Helen Keller
‘To nurture our life we need to learn how to protect our emotional wellbeing.’
We all go through things in life that can drain us emotionally. Sometimes we are touched by things that cause us distress, sadly even trauma. Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, leaving us feeling lost or in crisis.
When it comes to keeping well emotionally, we need to know we can nurture ourselves and our life, it is something we must work on and maintain. When we are nurturing it helps support healing and promotes personal growth.
There are a number of ways that you can nurture you and keep yourself emotionally healthy.
Invest Time
Nurturing YOU requires time. It is an ongoing journey. Time is needed for you to reflect on your life and what supports your emotional health. This also includes doing the things needed to preserve and protect what keeps you feeling nourished.
Time is needed to practice self-care and manage the days when you may be struggling.
Time also allows for healing and recovery. Nurturing and maintaining recovery is unique to you. It isn’t a race or a competition. Everyone heals in different ways.
Self-Care
Self-care is vital to nurturing good emotional health, however, it isn’t easy. You often find you let slip the things needed to keep yourself on the right road, and soon enough your emotional health lets you know about it.
Self-care is different for everyone and it can take a long time to work out what supports you. I love photography, being out in nature and finding new and interesting places, this helps recharge me, especially after a long week.
Included is nurturing your physical body. The need for rest and sleep, a healthy diet and activity. Another part of self-care is learning to know yourself, not over doing things, but instead consciously slowing down when your mind and body needs to.
Learning to love and accept yourself
This is such a hard one for many. The nature of life with its many battles such as a difficult upbringing, distressing events or situations can leave you believing that you are not good enough, a burden, unloveable and defective. Over time you can find it difficult to love for yourself.
A major part of nurture, healing and growth is learning to love yourself. To see that you have worth. To instead of seeing defects, to see the beauty in you. Acceptance of who you are and thus finding self-love is vital to protecting and nurturing emotional wellbeing. It includes learning to accept that bad days are part of your journey too, and are needed in order to allow self reflection and growth. With acceptance comes inner peace.
Healthy Boundaries
Another part of nurturing yourself is respecting yourself. This includes how you allow others to treat you. Healthy boundaries support you to respect your needs and then how to communicate this to others.
You need healthy boundaries which keep your emotional health safe.
Healthy boundaries are the foundation that provide us with a base to build on, building a life we love.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness can be a wonderful way to nurture, heal and grow. It allows you to see how your past has moulded you, but has not defined you. That you future is unwritten and the only thing you can influence is your presence. It can teach you what you can and cannot control, how to be aware of unhelpful thoughts, and their behaviours. Protect your emotional wellbeing by making mindfulness part of your everyday life.
